A Practical Guide for Community Outreach
This guide is designed to offer suggestions for going door-to-door and sharing the Good News of Jesus. As you prepare to evangelize, several questions may arise: How do I begin? Where do I start? What should I say? What shouldn’t I say? The most important tool in sharing the Gospel is the Holy Spirit, who brings confidence, peace, and guidance. The greatest enemy is not people, but a spirit of fear. Let us pray boldly and approach the throne of God’s grace, seeking the help we need to fulfill our God-given assignments on earth.
Preparation
Prayer
The success of every outreach is determined by God, who sends the Holy Spirit to go before us. Prayer releases God’s power to accomplish His will on earth. God desires that everyone becomes His child, and evangelism becomes a natural outpouring of His work in us through the Holy Spirit. Jesus instructed us to pray to the Lord of the Harvest—Father God—to send laborers into the harvest. We are merely laborers; He is the Lord of the Harvest. Think of it like a farmer with a field of ripe strawberries. He needs laborers to bring in the crop. The laborers don't worry about the unripe strawberries—they focus on the ripe ones. In the same way, we are called to harvest the souls ready to receive the Gospel. We cannot save anyone ourselves. Evangelism is not about "winning souls" or winning debates; it is about partnering with God, who uses us as vessels to draw people to Himself. It’s crucial to pray before going out. Pray for courage, for the Holy Spirit to prepare hearts, and for discernment to follow His lead.
Defining Salvation
It’s important not to use too many religious terms. When using a term like "salvation," provide a clear and simple definition. Salvation is not about getting people out of hell and into heaven. It’s about becoming a child of God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. While heaven is a glorious benefit, salvation is about receiving new life in Christ. Jesus said we must be born again—born of the Spirit. As the Apostle John wrote, "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name" (John 1:12, NKJV). Methods for salvation vary, but the key is the Holy Spirit transforming a person into a child of God. Praying “The Sinner’s Prayer,” baptism, and church attendance don’t bring someone to salvation; being born of the Spirit of God is what brings us into the family of God. Be careful not to lead anyone astray by implying that salvation is earned through religious acts.
Before You Go
Go in Pairs
When Jesus sent out His disciples, He sent them in twos (Luke 10:1). Having a partner provides accountability, protection, and support. One person should speak, while the other silently intercedes. This avoids confusion and helps the encounter feel less overwhelming for those you meet.Have a Plan
Identify a specific neighborhood or area to visit. Create maps to avoid duplicating visits and ensure every home is reached. Your leader should assign you to a specific area or region.Bring Bibles and Informative Gifts
Prepare simple, informative handouts about your church or event. Include a tract that explains how someone can become a child of God. Since people are often busy, handouts allow you to leave the message even if they don’t have time to talk. I always love to give a Bible. There is nothing more powerful than the Word of God.
Interaction Guidelines
Structure helps, but every encounter requires flexibility and sensitivity to the Holy Spirit’s guidance. The Holy Spirit draws, convicts, and saves—our role is to share the message. Be prepared for different responses: gratitude, curiosity, or even rejection. In every situation, ask God for wisdom (Proverbs 2:1-8).
Approaching the House
Be Respectful: Don’t touch their cars, walk on their grass, or peer into their windows. Use the designated path to the front door.
Safety First: Avoid fenced yards if you're unsure about dogs. If no one answers, leave the materials in a visible spot.
Navigating the Discussion
Introduction:
Greet them with warmth. For example: “Good afternoon! My name is Austin, and this is Derek. We’re part of 12 Oaks Church, just over the overpass on Red Oak Road.” Be brief, smile, and be excited to share that you're offering a free Bible and gift bag.Connection:
Explain your purpose: “We’re going through the neighborhood passing out free Bibles and inviting people to our upcoming event.” If they accept the gift, ask if others in the home or friends would like one as well.
Sharing the Good News:
Use simple language, avoiding religious jargon. Briefly share your personal testimony and how receiving Jesus changed your life. Use a salvation tract. Always ask if you can pray for them and if they have any prayer requests.
Afterwards
Follow-Up:
Ask if they’d like to be included in the church’s communication list and the “Daily Promises”. Fill out an information card and report back to the church for debriefing.
Special Circumstances
Busy People:
If someone is occupied, simply offer the Bible and gift bag, allowing them to explore the message at their own pace.Believers:
If you meet a fellow believer, encourage them to stay committed to their church. If they’re not attending anywhere, invite them to yours.Argumentative People:
If someone wants to argue, don’t engage in debates. Gently explain that you’re there to share God’s love and offer a free gift, not to discuss differences. Leave the Bible and gift bag and wish them a blessed day.Angry People:
If someone becomes hostile, remain calm and loving. Exit peacefully, leaving a “fragrance of love” behind.Debriefing:
After each interaction, discuss the encounter with your team, but do so out of earshot of the home. Use this time to pray for those you’ve spoken with before moving to the next house.
Conclusion
Door-to-door evangelism is just one method of sharing the Gospel. I pray that this guide helps you boldly share the love of God with your neighbors, family, and community. You are called to be a laborer in God’s harvest—let’s take our place in His plan to turn the children of the world into children of God!
